Pop art meets ice: an interview with Romero Britto for Art on Ice

Colourful, optimistic, iconic. Romero Britto is one of the most prominent voices in the contemporary pop art movement. For Art of Ice, he brings not only his world of colour, but also a clear mission: art should not be exclusive, rather it should reach as many people as possible.

Against all odds: Romero Britto’s journey from Brazil to royalty

Britto grew up in a large family amid poverty, something which has continually shaped him and his personality. For him, growing up in difficult circumstances was a kind of training: don’t place limitations on yourself, don’t give up, always be ready to seize opportunities – against all odds.

The moment he decided to become a full-time artist was “almost like being born again”. A decisive key moment followed in the shape of a commission for Absolut Vodka, a brand that had already worked with artists like Andy Warhol. Suddenly his art was showcased to an audience of millions. This project not only revealed his potential, but also opened up the door to global renown.

Today, his portrait portfolio ranges from popes to US presidents, and from figures from the world of business to royals.

Pop art for the anniversary: Romero Britto and Art on Ice

For Art on Ice, Romero Britto has left far more than an artistic fingerprint: to celebrate 30 years of the show, he designed the official anniversary logo and produced a special Art on Ice artwork. His inspiration was Switzerland: the majestic mountains and peaks, ice and snow, the unique winter spirit. Britto combined all of these influences with values like passion, love, humanity and culture.

His vibrant, colourful art is also integrated into multiple numbers in the show, making it part of the production on the ice. As well as this, limited-edition fan merchandise bearing Romero Britto’s exclusive Art on Ice artwork is available from the Art on Ice shop.

In our video interview with Art on Ice founder Oliver Höner, Britto explains how he works, what motivates him and why the collaboration with Art on Ice is so exciting for him.
